Snape did not put the sword in the lake.
It was Dumbledore who placed the Sword of Gryffindor in the frozen lake in the final book of the Harry Potter series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. Dumbledore placed the sword there to protect it and ensure that only someone worthy would be able to retrieve it.
